Introduction
The birth of a handicapped
child is a shattering experience. The parents need sustained guidance
to help their children lead normal lives. Every child has a right to
education, but a child with a disability is usually denied this basic
right and struggles to find expression in a world that alienates the
child.
The Indian
community took up the responsibility of launching a Special Care
Centre for such children, in the face of enormous challenges and in
1995, a Centre for handicapped children was started. This is now the
International Indian Public School Special Care Centre which is
licenced with the Saudi Ministry of Education. The Centre aims to
provide individual care and attention, specialised training, clinical
support services, family guidance and counseling. These exceptional
children, deprived of their emotional needs for acceptance,
achievement and affection, are often denied the challenge of reading,
writing and arithmetic as well. We would like to offer them that
challenge and give them the confidence to make their lives meaningful
and productive. The Special Care Centre wishes to reach out to these
children and solicits
support and encouragement of every concerned individual in the Kingdom
of Saudi Arabia.
Eligibility
The Special
Care Centre is for exceptional children with developmental
disabilities such as attention deficit disorders, learning
disabilities, Down's syndrome, childhood autism, mental retardation
and other behavioural and emotional disorders. It strives to promote a
caring, accepting and stimulating environment. The Special Care Centre
has special educators assisted by a panel of part time consultants,
including pediatricians, clinical psychologists, speech and language
therapists and physiotherapists.
The Centre is
the only one of its kind in Riyadh for expatriate children. Currently
the Centre is home to children of all nationalities. Children from
Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Ghana, Sudan, Eritrea, Mauritius, Sri
Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Saudi Arabia learn to work and

Curriculum
The children attend the school
from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday through Wednesday. The
curriculum includes training in motor, communication, social, self
help, academic, recreational and prevocational domains. A multi
sensory behavioural approach is adopted involving task analysis and
structural teaching. Parental participation plays a vital role in
extending the benefits of the school training to the home and social
milieu of the child. The curriculum aims at fostering social
integration and personal independence in addition to academic and
prevocational skills training. To facilitate the emotional and social
development of the child, the Centre offers many fun filled
therapeutic and recreational activities. These activities include
physiotherapy, music and dance, arts and crafts, nature and
environmental trips to sharpen the mind and to stimulate the
imagination of the child.
The parent
staff meetings are scheduled regularly. Regular parent attendance is
crucial for maintaining the child's progress and programme planning.
Parents can contact the Centre for consultations. Saturday through
Wednesday, between 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
