We are pleased to present the July-September 2002 issue of SJDR. A varied blend of articles from such diverse fields like Endocrinology, Prosthetics, Orthotics, Paediatrics, Psychology, etc. constitute the core of this issue. As we are aware, diabetes is rapidly escalating to alarming proportions. Recent data show that in Saudi Arabia one in Saudi Arabia one in five individuals beyond the age of 30 have diabetes. 17% of the population representing around 1 million sufferers reside in the country. This calls for massive mobilization of resources from all health care providers, not only diabetologists to combat this serious problem. Since patient education is the best way to create public awareness on diabetes and its long term complications, the article by Dr. Ensaf Saied Abdel-Gawad about the "Quality of life in Saudis with Diabetes" should provide a valuable insight into the lifestyle of diabetics and assist health care personnel to formulate proper education programmes, to help diabetic patients.
Prosthetics and orthotics form an integral part of rehabilitation of the disabled. This is aptly proved by the article of Dr. Khayria A. Al-Abduljawad, on "Impact of Using Hearing Aid and its Benefits, wherein the response to the use of hearing aids is well documented. Similarly, two other articles, "Variable Output Foot Sensors to Provide Pressure Distribution on the Foot During Gait" by Dr. Jerrold S. Petrofsky and "Design of an Internal Three Speed Hub for a Manual Wheelchair" by Prof. Rory A. Cooper, et al. should be quite informative and innovative.
This issue also contains an article by Asghar Ali Shah and Maher Bano who are to be commended for highlighting the emotional problems of handicapped children, hitherto unaccounted for.
Last but not the least, a comprehensive overview on "Obesity" by Dr. Salma Nikhat should provide great food for thought for all those of us who are unsuccessfully "combating the battle of the bulge".
I am sure you will find this issue interesting and informative. Please send us your comments on this issue which will help us improve the quality of our publication.

Thank you.
